All Day 2018 Seen Enough Tobacco Day Local Event – 2018 Seen Enough Tobacco Day Youth across New York State are declaring October 13 as the second annual “Seen Enough Tobacco Day” to protect themselves and other children from the billions of dollars of tobacco promotions in places where they and other youth can see and be influenced by them. The goal is to put an end to youth smoking and other tobacco use. There is an event in Elmira that we invite you to cover. We are hoping to set up a radio interview with you between 10/5-10/12 in advance of the event. Please let us know if there is a day, time and call-in number that works best for you. When: Saturday, October 13 from 3-6 p.m. = best time for visuals (event runs 3-9 p.m.) What: Bradley Farms is celebrating a new tobacco-free grounds policy. On October 13, Reality Check youth, along with other local youth organizations, will be on site facilitating Halloween-themed games and activities such as a balloon pumpkin patch, witch hat ring toss and pin the spider on the web. There will be tombstones on display with spooky tobacco facts. In New York State, the average age of a new smoker is 13 years old so there will also be a birthday cake with 13 cigarettes in place of candles. The community is invited to show its support for a tobacco-free Southern Tier by taking photos using a life-size Instagram frame. This is a family-friendly event with several free prizes and games for the community. There are opportunities for media to interview youth. Where: Bradley Farms, 1543 Maple Avenue, Elmira, NY 14904 Who: Reality Check of the Southern Tier, Glove House, SADD of Elmira High School Day-of Media Contacts: 3-6 p.m. – Sarah Robbins, program director 607-857-3825 (cell) 5-9 p.m. – Samantha White, Reality Check coordinator 607-542-7368 (cell) and Michelle Larimore, community engagement coordinator Youth members of Reality Check of New York will hold local events across the state on Seen Enough Tobacco Day to help raise awareness and encourage community members to stand up to big tobacco by signing an online petition at www.SeenEnoughTobacco.org. Reality Check youth are working tirelessly to build a tobacco-free generation. The day is part of the overall statewide “Seen Enough Tobacco” initiative. There is overwhelming evidence that the more young people see tobacco marketing, the more likely they are to start smoking, according to a report of the U.S. Surgeon General. The average age of a new smoker in New York is just 13 years old. Leading up to Seen Enough Tobacco Day, Tobacco Free NYS and local groups across the state are sharing shocking statistics about youth tobacco marketing and the health impacts of smoking on their social media pages.
